Meditation Shown To Help With IBS Pain

New research is confirming meditation’s positive effect on the body. It found that those who practiced it and yoga regularly for two months experienced far fewer symptoms related to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and irritable bowel disease (IBD)–both are gastrointestinal disorders that can cause a high level of discomfort in people.

The interesting thing is, the changes seemed to happen at the genetic level, not just symptomatically. Researchers believe that the mental relaxation can suppress gene responses related to inflammation and other reactionary immune responses in people who are susceptible to IBS or IBD.

This is the first research that has linked meditation to a specific disease-related genetic change. It seems to confirm previous findings that showed a link between levels of stress and digestive issues. Both are thought to play key roles in overall health.
