Using Breath to Relieve Pain


This is a woman’s incredible story about the way a breathing technique called pranayama helped to dissipate a week-long headache she had. Though it represents one person’s experience, conscious breathing has been shown to be an effective way to lower stress and help to relieve pain in many cases.

The practice of pranayama is often done in yoga in the form of alternate nostril breathing which helps to clear the sinuses and calm the nervous system. Clear instructions are provided in the article, but basically, you inhale through one nostril, exhale through the other, inhale through the same, and exhale through the other.

One of the great things about this breathing practice is that it can be done anywhere as a form of meditation. So if you’re feeling tense in traffic or the beginnings of pain at work, it might be worth doing a few rounds of pranayama breathing to reset your mind and body.
